Denmark fields its strongest line-up

There were no big surprises when the Danish squad for the European Team Squash Championships was picked towards the end of the month. The five men with the task of putting Denmark back in the top division are the same five players who currently head the Danish rankings: Kristian Frost, Rasmus Møller Nielsen, Morten W. Sørensen, Caspar Grauballe and Thomas Laursen.

Danish Champion Kristian Frost has been playing up a storm recently, winning two international tournaments, although he failed to beat Rasmus Møller Nielsen in Kolding in the last round of league matches, losing in four sets. Hopefully this is a sign that all the players are on top form for the European Championships.

In the women's competition Line Hansen, Sally Skaarenborg, Mathilde Lauridsen and Cecilie Mayer will be flying the flag for Denmark against some of the world's best players. The team came sixth at last year's European Championships, guaranteeing them another season in Europe's top flight. Line Hansen is the only one for whom playing the best in the world is an everyday occurrence, so it will be exciting to see whether the team can improve on last year's result and maybe even get among the medals.

The players have every reason to be at the top of their game right now, with the finals of both the team and individual Danish Championships being held over the coming weekends.

Teams:

Kristian Frost Olesen, Birkerød Squash Klub

Rasmus Møller Nielsen, Kolding KFUM Squash

Caspar Grauballe, Herlev/Hjorten Squash

Morten Wiegandt Sørensen, City Squash

Thomas Laursen, Kolding KFUM Squash

Line Unschuld Hansen, Birkerød Squash Klub

Sally Skaarenborg, Kolding KFUM Squash

Mathilde Lauridsen, Kolding KFUM Squash

Cecilie Mayer, Birkerød Squash Klub

World-class squash

Danish squash is counting down to the European Squash Team Championships, which this year are being held in Herning from 29 April to 2 May. The best players from 20 European countries will be descending on the moors of Jutland.

Immediately prior to the European Championships, Danish pro Line U. Hansen will have the chance to win the Danish Championship for the tenth time in a row. In October 2013, Line U. Hansen reached number 18 in the world, making her the highest ranking Dane ever. Line U. Hansen is now a full-time professional squash player and lives in The Hague in the Netherlands.

"Playing in the European Championship at home will be amazing. It's a long time since we had a big squash event on Danish soil. It will be good for Danish squash to get some attention," says Line U. Hansen.

The tournament will be a very special experience for Kristian Frost, Denmark's best male player.

"The European Championships coming to Herning means an awful lot to me. I grew up in Gjellerup just outside Herning and played at Sport92 all through my junior years. I feel that both Herning and Sport92 are my home turf, and having the European Championships in Herning is beyond words."

Hopefully the spectators will also flock to the glass courts when the favourites from England and France take centre stage. At the last European Championships in 2014, both the men's and women's finals were between the two nations. It will be exciting to see just what the Danes – and the other nations – can do when they come up against the world number two (Grégory Gaultier, France) and number threes (Nick Matthew, England and Laura Massaro, England).

The tournament is being held from Wednesday 29 April to Saturday 2 May, when the finals will be played on the specially installed glass court at Sportscenter Herning.
