Denmark as a sporting event host

Denmark has previously hosted the IOC Session & Olympic Congress 2009, UCI Road World Championships 2011, UEFA Under-21 European Football Championship, LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships 2013, FEI European Equestrian Championships 2013 in dressage and jumping, and CEV European Men’s Volleyball Championships 2013 with phenomenal success.

In 2014 alone it played host to the IWRF World Wheelchair Championships 2014, Men’s European Handball Championship, Made in Denmark European Tour, Lin-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships, and World Half Marathon Championships, which included a large public recreational race with 30,000 participants.

Denmark will host the following great events, among others, in the next few years: the World Archery Championships 2015, Made in Denmark – Golf European Tour 2015-16, 2015 Women's Handball World Championship and Men's World Handball Championship 2019, ISAF Sailing Worlds 2018 and IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships 2018.

Sport Event Denmark’s partners for these events are federations/host cities, and their aim is to attract, organize and develop large international spectator and participant events.

National sports event organization

Sport Event Denmark is the national Danish sports event organization. It was set up and is supported by the Danish Government and the National Olympic Committee and Sports Confederation of Denmark.


In order to help develop and promote sport, the main objective of Sport Event Denmark is to attract and host major international sports events and conferences. Sport Event Denmark is primarily focused on sports that have a strong base in Denmark, whether at the elite or sport-for-all level.

After many years of focused and high-profile endeavour, Sport Event Denmark is viewed as a credible and trusted partner in the sports world.

Denmark has succeeded in winning more than 80% of its international bid campaigns. Denmark and its capital, Copenhagen, have also been ranked in the Top 15 of the Global Sports Nations/Cities Index 2014.
